The organization aims to protect, advance and promote the Human Rights of Zambian sexual minorities by engaging law and policy makers in legal reform, build capacity to undertake effective advocacy, establish member services based on identified needs and priorities, and to research, gather, analyze and disseminate information. Human rights must be seen as indivisible and universal as is enshrined in international law.
VISION: “A Zambian society that embraces diversity and upholds the rights of all”
MISSION: F.O.R. is a non-governmental, not-for-profit Organization that champions the rights of sexual minorities in Zambia through advocacy, information dissemination, legal reform, research and direct service provision.
VALUES: Our values aid us to achieve our mission:
Co-operation
We work towards a system based on social and economic justice, interdependence, solidarity and respect rather than competition and exploitation. We want a Zambia without the systems of oppression.
Creativity
We believe in stimulating innate creative energy by providing the tools that will allow the deliverance of our values.
Integrity
In our work, we will strive for transparency, be honest about what we are doing and do what we say.
Freedom
The concept of absolute freedom is central to the whole of our organization. We believe that all should be liberated so as to realize their freedom practically.
Description
In the recent past HIVOS International, a Dutch Organization (Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Country) provided funding that has alleviated the organization’s financial woes.
The organization has informally provided psycho-social support for members of the community, providing counseling, education on sex, sexuality, gender, safe sex practices and HIV/AIDS. In December 2008, F.O.R. officially opened office and as our first of many activities, in February 2009, we held an Organizational development and capacity building workshop and a follow up workshop on advocacy and human rights in March, 2009.
FOR has strived to collaborate with human rights and health based NGOs but the existing laws have limited our number of partners domestically and has denied us access to traditional sources of funding.
